Nitrous Oxide: What’s It Like?

If you’re considering coming in for a visit to talk about dental implants, you’ve scheduled your implant procedure, or you’re dealing with any other aspect of oral surgery, you may find that we suggest nitrous oxide at some point. While you are likely experiencing some emotional relief knowing we provide dental sedation, you may still have some questions about this particular form of sedative. How Will I Receive It?

Receiving nitrous oxide is so very easy. All you are going to do is lie back in our dental chair. We will place a small, comfortable mask over your nose. You will do your usual thing (in short, you’ll just breathe as usual). The sedative is a gas, which you will breathe in. The effects will begin to make themselves apparent immediately!

Is It Referred To As Laughing Gas (And Why)?

About those effects: It’s called laughing gas because it makes you feel like you don’t really have a care in the world. Many patients get the giggles because it tends to help you experience a bit of euphoria. As you are starting to see, your dental implant journey can be an easy one.

Can I Combine It With Other Sedation?

You may combine nitrous oxide with other forms of sedation. Combining it with oral sedation is a common way to achieve a level of calm that’s deeper, though without choosing IV sedation.

Will It Take Time To Wear Off?

Not very much time at all. You will need to wait around as it leaves your body for a few minutes. However, once we determine that it’s safe for you to leave our practice, you can go about your plans as usual without any down time.
