Losing a single tooth used to mean receiving a dental bridge. Placement would involve the removal of surrounding tooth structure and the prosthetic would only last between 10 and 15 years. Fortunately, we have an alternative that can provide decades, possibly even a lifetime, of quality tooth replacement. How do we place implants and crowns? Can anyone benefit from this prosthetic option?
Frequently Asked Questions About Implants and Crowns
Question: Who qualifies for one?
Answer: We recommend them for patients that have lost one or more teeth. We will need to examine the smile to look for signs of periodontal disease, as the advanced stage of the disease can lead to tooth loss and implant failure. We may recommend treating any underlying gum issues before proceeding. We will also assess the strength of the jawbone to make sure it can support the new tooth, otherwise a bone grafting procedure may be necessary.
Question: How do you place them?
Answer: We will choose the optimal area for placement and then an oral surgeon will insert the implant into the jawbone. Afterward, the area will need to heal. During this stage, the process of osseointegration occurs, which bonds the dental implant post with the jawbone like a natural tooth root, stimulating the growth of jawbone tissue and preventing further loss of jawbone density.
Question: When do you add the crown?
Answer: After the healing process, we will add an abutment to the implant that anchors the crown in place. The crown will be custom-made using lifelike materials, such as ceramic, to ensure a natural looking and durable restoration.
Question: How do I maintain my new tooth?
Answer: To maintain your new tooth, you need to care for it as you would a natural one. Make time every six months for a checkup and cleaning, and also brush and floss your teeth daily.
