What Causes Missing Teeth?

When a patient loses a tooth, we may recommend a dental implant. Should a patient lose multiple teeth, we can use multiple implants to secure prosthetics, with implant-retained bridges, partial and full dentures, mini-implants, and even All-on-4 teeth in a day. But what causes missing teeth? Why do we lose teeth as adults?

Poor Oral Hygiene

Did you now that not taking good care of your teeth can lead to problems with stability? When we don’t care for our smiles, plaque buildup can accumulate on the teeth. The process that leads to plaque, which involves bacteria breaking down food particles, can also lead to higher levels of oral acidity. Combined, these factors can lead to gum inflammation and enamel erosion, increasing the risk of common oral health concerns that can also elevate the chances of adult tooth loss.

Periodontal Disease

When gum disease remains untreated, it can grow worse until periodontitis occurs. The advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis can eventually break down the tissues that connect the teeth and gums, causing teeth to become loose and eventually, lost. In fact, gum disease is the most common cause of missing teeth in adults and seniors.

Damage

If a tooth becomes chipped, cracked, or broken, infection can develop eventually that leads to tooth loss. Having a damaged tooth repaired is essential for maintaining a healthy smile.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each session
