Your Implants, Your Flossing, Your Questions!

Pack of dental floss

If you have dental implants or you are giving the idea a whirl, one of your first concerns may have something to do with your daily life. What will they feel like? Will they function like natural teeth? Then, there’s the very common: Will they be easy to take care of? Fortunately, implants are very simple to maintain as they generally require the same care that your natural smile requires. As for the flossing aspect of your dental hygiene, our Livonia, MI team thinks you just might have some questions for us. Let’s put those inquiries to rest with our quick question-and-answer session!

Questions and Answers

Question: Is it going to be extremely hard to floss when I have dental implants? I keep hearing things about superfloss but I don’t know if this means I’m going to need additional accessories or not.

Answer: In many cases, you will be able to simply rely on the same dental floss you’ve always used for your dental hygiene. For some, the addition of something known as “superfloss” may give you a bit of extra cleansing power, should you need it. How to figure out whether you’ll stick with your usual products or may choose to try something new? It’s as easy as talking with us about your approach when you meet with our team for a visit.

Question: How about a water flosser? Is this something that you suggest I use in place of dental floss as I clean my smile and dental implants?

Answer: Nothing ever replaces dental floss. It’s an extremely important part of your oral health protection, as it offers exceptional removal of both plaque and debris from between teeth and from beneath your gumline. With that said, adding a water flosser to your routine is always a wonderful choice. It offers even more cleansing, which is always beneficial for your smile and gum health.

Question: Do I still need to brush twice every day and just floss one time? Am I allowed to floss more frequently?

Answer: As for keeping your smile healthy with dental implants, yes, you will still be flossing just once a day and will need to brush two times a day. You are welcome to floss more frequently if you feel you have trapped food! However, there’s no need to floss multiple times every day. Be sure you’re gentle to avoid accidentally irritating gum tissue!
