As with your natural teeth, dental implants are exceptionally strong and can withstand quite a storm! However, that does not mean that they are capable of withstanding anything that comes their way. Your natural teeth can become damaged and they can break. Your implants may become damaged (or the tissue they sit within injured), too, which can guide you swiftly in the direction of failure. What you want, of course, is success. Keep in mind, among other suggestions, that too much pressure may result in serious problems. Consider helpful details!
Forms Of Pressure
Simply stated, your dental implants can handle only so much pressure. You may think to yourself, “Well how will I know if it’s too much or not?” This is fairly easy to determine. If you’re doing your daily thing, laughing, speaking, and eating foods that do not present much resistance (you can bite and chew through them with ease), then you’re not causing any problems. However, excess pressure may come in the form of the following, for example:
- Forcing your smile to break apart food that’s extremely tough or hard
- Bruxism, which is a disorder that includes your chronic (but unintentional) teeth grinding or clenching
- Poor bite balance, which allows certain teeth to come into greater contact than others
What To Do
Ease up! While it’s fun to pretend your dental implants are immune to all problems, recognize that you must treat them like you would treat natural teeth. If you suffer from bruxism, accept treatment! If you are eating foods that are too difficult to chew, cut them up first with a fork and knife or find a new meal option. Don’t chew on things like pens or ice. Avoid the pressure and your smile will remain safe. Worried about something? Call us!
