How Do You Place Dental Implants?

We’ve discussed the benefits of receiving dental implants before, including their longevity and lifelike appearance. But what does placing them involve? How does our team place a dental implant and who makes a good candidate for them?

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implant Placement

Question: How do you decide who makes a viable candidate?

Answer: We will look at a number of factors. For example, we may assess the strength of the jawbone tissue, which can deteriorate after tooth loss and will need to be strong enough to support a new tooth. Patients with weak jawbone tissue may need to undergo a bone grafting procedure before we place a the new tooth. We also look for the presence of periodontitis. The advanced stage of gum disease can cause implant failure, so we may need to address any underlying periodontal issues first.

Question: How do you place them?

Answer: After choosing the optimal area for placement, an oral surgeon will insert a biocompatible titanium post into the jawbone. Over a period of three to four months, the implant post will bond with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration.

Question: When do you add a restoration?

Answer: After the healing period, we add an abutment to the post. The abutment will hold a custom-made implant in place, competing the visible portion of the tooth.

Question: What if I’m receiving a full or partial prosthetic?

Answer: If so, we may will most likely place multiple implant posts. Then, a lifelike prosthetic will be  created. After the healing period, we will attach the completed prosthetic.
