Implant Vs. Removable Dentures

Losing a majority of your teeth can impact your overall health, sense of self-confidence, and your appearance. A full or partial prosthetic is necessary to address the problem. In the past, your only option was a removable denture. Now, we can secure a prosthetic using dental implants. Which options is right for you, implant or removable dentures?

Removable Dentures

A removable denture contains a full row of replacement teeth set into a base that looks like natural gum tissue. The prosthetic is held in place with natural suction, although some people will also require the use of a special adhesive for added security. The prosthetic will need to be replaced about every five to ten years as the jaw changes shape.

Implant-Retained Dentures

First, there is no need for natural suction or an adhesive. Instead, between six and eight implant posts will be inserted into the jaw. They will bond with the jawbone like natural tooth roots. This means stimulating the growth of jawbone tissue and preventing the mouth for changing shape. The prosthetic is snapped onto the implants, fixing them firmly in place. There is little risk of them slipping in meals or during speech. In addition, they can potentially last a lifetime with proper care and attention.
