The Causes and Complications of Missing Teeth
We may suffer from tooth loss as a result of an injury or accident, or an untreated case of tooth decay or dental infection. The most common cause is actually periodontitis, however, the advanced stage of gum disease. This stage of the disease actually destroys the tissue that connects your teeth and gums. Your teeth then become loose and eventually, lost. Losing one or more teeth could lead to misalignment, as the surrounding teeth drift from position. The strain on the jaw joints and bite balance could mean the onset of TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). You could have trouble eating or speaking too. The body will suspend the flow of key nutrients to the jawbone around the missing roots, which means the jawbone loses mass and density, a complication linked to further tooth loss and even an aged appearance!
The New Roots
Removable dentures and dental bridges tend to last about 5 to 10 years, and require replacement because the loss of mass and density in the jawbone changes how they fit. But! By instead inserting one or more dental implant posts, we can stimulate the growth of these tissues and preserve the jaw ridge. This is because each post is made from biocompatible titanium, which is accepted as natural roots. This supports sturdy prosthetics that never slip, so you can eat and smile with confidence. Your new teeth could last for decades to come, even a lifetime in some cases.
Addressing the Visible Portion of Your Smile
Once we place the roots and the area heals, we will move forward with the visible portion of your new smile. For an individual one, we add an abutment that extends above the gum line. Next, we attach a custom-made crown. The restoration will look natural and blend with your smile, while also offering a durable chewing surface. For multiple missing teeth, the abutments could be used to secure a bridge, partial, or even a full set of dentures. If you have any questions, then give us a call today!
