What Makes Dental Implants Last So Long?

A removable denture, whether full or partial, lasts about 5 to 10 years. A traditional dental bridge lasts a bit longer, as long as 10 to 15 years. But what if there was an option that could last for decades, possibly even a lifetime? In today’s blog, your Livonia, MI, dentist discusses how your dental implants last so long.

The Osseointegration Process

When you receive a dental bridge, the prosthetic is held in place with crowns attached to abutment teeth. Your dentures will be held in place with suction, clasps, or a special adhesive. However, this doesn’t stop the gradual breakdown of jawbone structure that follows tooth loss. When you lose a tooth, the body will suspend or divert the flow of calcium and phosphorus that is usually sent to the tissue around a missing tooth. Without these nutrients, the bone tissue breaks down. Then dentures and bridges need to be replaced every five years or so, as the jaw ridge is changing shape and altering the fit.

But dental implants are inserted right into the jawbone. Each one is made from titanium, which is biocompatible. This allows osseointegration to take place, which bonds the bone tissue and the new root. This stops the breakdown of the jaw structure, preserving your bite and allowing your new teeth to last for decades to come.

Addressing One or More Missing Teeth

We can address an individual missing tooth with one post, or secure a bridge or denture with several. We plan and guide the placement process with digital technology, choosing positions and angles to stimulate the growth of bone tissue and support a crown or denture, so you enjoy new teeth that look and function like natural ones. When you lose one tooth, or if you have several gaps in your smile, then let us know. A full smile is possible, and could even preserve your facial structure to prevent an aged appearance.

Daily Care

To keep your new teeth strong and safeguard your natural ones, you simply care for them as you would your natural smile. You should brush and floss daily, enjoy a healthy diet, avoid tobacco, and of course, see us for a checkup and cleaning every six months. If you have any questions, then contact our team today to learn more. Now is a great time to undergo care, as you can use your 2021 dental insurance benefits before they expire at the end of December!
